Do I need technical knowledge?

No.

MeshCore is designed so that you can start with a Companion without having to understand radio technology or networking.

If you want to explore the technology in more depth later, there are many opportunities to do so.

Does MeshCore need mobile internet?

No – mobile internet is not required for communication within the MeshCore network itself.

Your Companion communicates directly with other Companions and uses Repeaters to reach further parts of the network.

The Companion App on your smartphone serves as the user interface for your device. Communication within the MeshCore network takes place through the MeshCore radio connection.

Do I need a Repeater?

No.

A Repeater extends the range of the network and connects different areas, but a single Companion is already a complete participant.

Many people use MeshCore exclusively with their personal device.

Can I use MeshCore on my own?

Yes.

Even if you do not know other users in your immediate area at first, you can set up your Companion, observe the network, and discover other participants over time.

Is MeshCore a replacement for mobile communication?

No.

MeshCore complements existing communication options.

It is particularly interesting when independent communication is desired or when traditional infrastructure is not reliably available.

Do I need a specific smartphone?

No.

The Companion is the actual MeshCore device. The Companion App serves as the interface for operating it.

The choice of smartphone therefore plays only a secondary role.

Does MeshCore work everywhere?

MeshCore can generally be used wherever the appropriate radio conditions and legal requirements are met.

How well communication works depends on terrain, locations, and available infrastructure.

In a region like the Rhön, with hills and valleys, the placement of Repeaters plays an important role.

How far can MeshCore reach?

There is no fixed range.

The distance over which devices can communicate depends on many factors:

  • terrain
  • location
  • antenna
  • surroundings
  • available Repeaters

MeshCore is therefore not a system where a single guaranteed range can be specified. What matters is the interaction of many participants and locations.

Can I operate my own Repeater?

Yes.

Operating your own Repeater can make a valuable contribution.

However, it is not a requirement and it is not a goal that every participant needs to achieve. Even a small number of well-placed Repeaters can connect large areas.

Do I need to regularly maintain my device?

No.

A Companion is not a device that requires constant attention.

Once it is configured, you can simply use it and take it with you whenever you want.
