What is MeshCore?

MeshCore is free software for small radio devices. It enables the exchange of short messages over radio, independent of mobile phone networks and the Internet.

At its simplest, two devices can communicate directly with each other. From there, larger regional radio networks can be built, allowing messages to travel far beyond the range of a single device.

Most users carry a Companion. A Companion is a small radio device that is conveniently operated using the MeshCore Companion App on a smartphone. Messages are written and read on the phone, while the Companion provides the radio connection.

To extend communication beyond individual devices, Repeaters are used. These dedicated relay stations are operated by volunteers at carefully selected locations and forward messages throughout the network. They form the backbone of a regional MeshCore network.

As more Companions and Repeaters join the network, its coverage and capabilities continue to grow.

Over the past few years, this has led to the creation of a regional MeshCore network across the Rhön. If you bring your own device, you can immediately become part of that network.
